I am pretty competitive. If I see someone in the office pushing themselves, I push myself harder.
I feel worse when I don't try enough. But sometimes I get tired. I am a single mom and sometimes all I seem to have is 10% in total.

I have no problem giving 100% unless it is for myself. I give to others over and over and then I seem to be all exhasted and no room for me. So I dont even know how to give myself 100%. I can totally relate to that article about ironing the pants. My kids look great every morning and I am running around in torn hose trying to get ready for work while they are watching tv...ugh!!!

My 10% has to do with my roommates and me. A couple of years ago, while I was still in college, dishes in our kitchen were starting to pile up. It seemed like I was the only one doing them- even my passive aggressive pounding of plates at 7:30 in the morning did nothing to make my roommates aware at my discontent. It took skill to use every inch of the sink, and we were masters. We all knew it too. Each one of us talked about how we needed to do the dishes, hoping that saying it would trigger some altruism in the other person and they would volunteer themselves. I sure wasn't going to do it. One morning, there were no dishes. Every single spoon, fork, knife, plate, bowl and glass were in the sink. I was sitting in the living room when i heard my roommate wake up, go to the kitchen, and pour himself a bowl of cereal. I was shocked. I thought that he would get so frustrated at the lack of dishes that he would just say, fine, i'll do them. No such case. Instead, he poured his cereal into something and came out to the living room. When I looked at him, he was carrying a giant mixing bowl, filled with cereal and milk. Sticking out of the bowl was a giant serving spoon. He sat down, took a bite, looked at me, and we cracked up. At that point I said fine, you win, I'll do the dishes. If any one of us had just taken the extra 10%, we could have been done with the dishes in 5 minutes. We chose to depend on each other to do our work, and it didn't get done. As hard as it is, It's best just to finish the task and move on.
Everyone-
Thanks for sharing. It isn't always easy to give the extra 10%, but who wants to eat cereal out of a giant mixing bowl, right?
Thanks for the feedback!
